![]() ![]() ![]() The plans for our freestanding closet is below. It's nice because you can build it in the garage, and then just set it up in the closet, or even in your room. This closet is freestanding, but we do recommend attaching to the wall just to prevent forward tipping. Then attached the shelving to the legs so it worked with my measurements. To get the closet to work with the 36" pipe pieces, I put the pipe fittings together first, then figured out how far apart I needed to space the legs. This was definitely the most expensive part, but the splurge was absolutely worth it!Ĭosts could be cut down by using a smaller pipe (1/2") or having less individual rods, and using longer pipes as the cost is in all the fittings.īut one thing to consider is the shelves above and below the pipes shouldn't span more than about 3 feet or they will start to sag, so I opted to make my closet rods using 36" pipes. But we also wanted to provide instruction on how the iron pipes went together. You can save alot of money (and it's easier) by just using wood dowels as recommended in the plans. The iron pipes were a big part of the budget. I'd estimate between $15-$20 a linear foot to build your own closets. If I had used dowels for closet rods, this project would have been under $150. The cost was surprising too! Here's what I spent. I also added a couple of smaller shelves in the middle, using the same method - 2x4 supports with 1x4s on top. You can do this!Īnd the end result is beautiful and functional! Here's how my ten foot long closet turned out. Then you add 1x4s inside the legs, at whatever length your closet is. You simply build "legs" from 2x4s with 1x4s screwed to the outsides. It's easier than you might think and you only need a couple of tools. You can build your own wood closet shelving. Have minimal experience with tools, but are up for an easy and inexpensive project?.Want a freestanding closet, that does not need to be attached to the wall.Want solid wood closet shelving (no particle board).Want a truly custom closet organizer - perfect for your things and no wasted space or compromises.Basically just take your time put the shelf on, get a level, and take it off and adjust where needed.Do you need to organize your closets, but. Since the back of the bracket can be flexible with enough pressure from the screws it can make the poles/rods bend upward/downward. For added security and avoid topple over incidences, make a similar ledge for the top shelf. Place the LACK on top of this ledge and screw it in from beneath the wood board. I would rather make a small shelf ledge wall brackets with a piece of wood cut to the size of the LACK base. I didn't and just put the shelves on and started putting stuff on them and ended up with some ends higher or lower than the other end on the shelf. Wall mounting the LACK wall unit backwards. IKEA’s recommended load for a shelf in this situation is maximum 5kg. The screw configuration used matched IKEA’s installation instructions, two screws above each bracket ‘pole’ and one underside screw in the centre. One piece of advice I would give is don't over tighten the brackets down at first. When customers ask me to fit a floating shelf on drywall I generally tell them NOOOO Drywall just isnt capable of supporting the large leverage forces tha. The shelf is fitted to standard 12.5mm drywall, deliberately avoiding all studs. Oh and I just took the screws that came with it and went to Lowes and had them find me some just like it so I had extra. It works pretty well, though I did great a drill bit in the process, I didn't really have bits designed for metal. I didn't want a lot of alligator clips in the wall so what I did is line up as many of the premade holes as I could with studs, then drilled in my own holes in the bracket where there were studs in the wall but no premade holes lined up. There's several sets of 2 holes along it. The brackets have a lot of holes in them but not all are too the American standard of stud placement. They can be a bit of a pain to work with and get installed but the bracket is sufficient. ![]()
